Rainstorm damages 100 buildings in Edo

Not fewer than 100 residential buildings in Okpella, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo, were destroyed by a downpour which occurred on Monday, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

The first rain of the year, which began around 3 p.m. and lasted for about four hours on Monday, also destroyed a school, electrical installations and farmlands.

A NAN correspondent, who visited the affected areas on Tuesday, reports that some residents were seen trying to salvage certain items from the ruins, while efforts were made to clear the debris of some damaged structures.

The classroom block of Iddo Community Grammar School was destroyed by the storm, forcing students to stay outdoors for their studies.

Some of the victims, who spoke to NAN, expressed shock over the incident, describing the rainstorm as the worst in the recent years.

They appealed to the state and local governments as well as well-meaning Nigerians to come to their aid.

One of the victims, Abdulahi Issah, described the development as the “will of God Almighty’’ which no person could have stopped.

He lamented that the entire roof of his house was blown off by the storm, which also brought down part of the fence.

“I am appealing to the relevant authorities to come to our aid, so as to cushion the effect of the rainstorm,’’ he said.

Another victim, Muhammed Muhammed, said that the disaster came at a time when most residents were facing cash crunch, urging Edo State Emergency Management Agency to urgently give succour to the victims.

“Most of us, the victims, are low-income earners who are struggling to cope with the daily challenges of life,’’ he said.

Kashim Otaru, the Vice-Principal of Iddo Grammar School, said that the main building in the school was completely destroyed by the storm, adding that the school authorities had to look for makeshift classrooms for the students.

“The rainstorm has wreaked havoc on our buildings; as you can see, we no longer have a roof over our head or a building where our students can sit down and learn.

“Therefore, we are appealing to the relevant authorities to come to our aid, as our students no longer have a place that is conducive to their studies,’’ he said.

George Michael Died of Natural Causes, Coroner Rules

George Michael died of natural causes at age 53, the coroner investigating his death revealed early Tuesday.

The legendary singer suffered a dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and fatty liver, according to the senior coroner for Oxfordshire, Darren Salter.

A statement from the coroner reads, “Enquires into the death of George Michael have been concluded and the final post mortem report received. As there is a confirmed natural cause of death, being Dilated Cardiomyopathy with Myocarditis and Fatty Liver, the investigation is being discontinued and there is no need for an inquest or any further enquiries. No further updates will be provided and the family requests the media and public respect their privacy.”

Dilated cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart, when the left ventricle stretches and fails to effectively pump blood, according to the Mayo Clinic. As the muscle becomes weaker, heart failure can occur. Meanwhile, myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart usually caused by a viral infection.

Fatty liver disease is the buildup of fat in the liver, most commonly caused by alcoholism. However, the disease can also happen in people who are not heavy drinkers, according to Mayo Clinic. Other common causes of fatty liver include obesity and diabetes.

Michael’s boyfriend Fadi Fawaz took to Twitter soon after the news broke, sharing a smiling photo of the couple.

“The Truth is out…” he captioned the black and white image.

He later responded to tabloid rumors surrounding Michael’s death by saying, “All the nasty comments, press and 999 were very cruel and unnecessary whatsoever, Now I hope to receive some real LOVE x.”

Thames Valley Police also commented on Michael’s death Tuesday, saying they were completing the related investigation.

“The investigation into the circumstances of the death has now concluded and a file was passed to the Coroner. As the cause of death was natural, no further action is proposed or required,” authorities wrote on Facebook. “No further updates will be provided and the family requests the media and public respect their privacy.”

The initial autopsy, completed on Dec. 30, was revealed to be “inconclusive” in a statement released by the Thames Valley police.

“The cause of death is inconclusive and further tests will now be carried out,” the statement read. “The results of the tests are unlikely to be known for several weeks.”

“Mr. Michael’s death is still being treated as unexplained but not suspicious,” police added at the time.

While the tests appeared to take a considerable amount of time, a spokesperson for the coroner’s court previously told PEOPLE that this is not unusual—as toxicology tests vary from individual to individual, some tests proceed much faster than others.

Michael died peacefully in his home on Christmas Day, his rep confirmed to PEOPLE. Michael’s U.S. publicist previously told PEOPLE that the musician died of heart failure.

Authorities responded to a property in Goring in Oxfordshire about 1:45 p.m. and investigators said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Michael’s death, according to the BBC.

Despite a claim from Michael’s childhood friend Andros Georgiou that “hard drugs had been back in his life,” the singer’s death had long been categorized as “unexplained but not suspicious.”

Michael suffered many health issues in recent years, though. In November 2011, the “Careless Whisper” singer was hospitalized for pneumonia. One year earlier, he was involved in a car accident and arrested for driving under the influence of marijuana.

Michael sold 100 million albums worldwide during his nearly 40 years in the spotlight, and has won a slew of awards. However, the star also fell on difficult times with multiple arrests as well as battles with depression and drug use.

Nigeria not on U.S.ban list -FG

Geoffrey Onyeama, Foreign Affairs Minister says no Nigerian with full valid entry visa has been denied entry to the U.S. as being widely spread.

Geoffrey Onyeama

Onyeama, who stated this while fielding questions from newsmen over the issue, said Nigerians were free to travel to U.S. as the country was not on the ban list.

The minister said he was constantly in touch with the Nigerian Ambassador to the U.S. and the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, adding that there was no report on Nigerians being denied entry into the U.S.

“On the issue of Nigerians being turned back from the U.S., this is not the case. “I am in touch with the U. S. Embassy and the Ambassador said no, there was nothing of such nature.

“I can tell you to ignore any call or advice to reconsider travelling to the U.S. because there is no basis for that. “We have absolutely no report whatsoever from the U.S. that people are being turned back from the U.S. or any of our consulate or any Nigerian that any of our people are being turned back,” he said.

According to him, if government is speaking on any external relations, it will be heard from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Presidency as any other source is not from the government. He said Nigeria had embassies in almost 114 countries across the world and the ministry relied on their reports.

“The U.S. Government has been reaching out to Nigeria. “The U.S. president took all the trouble to call our president and to offer the hand of cooperation to see how he was doing. “And, to congratulate him on the efforts he is being making and expressing the respect that he had for him, his leadership and his government,” he said.

According to him, the U.S Secretary of State called to echo exactly the same thing and our cooperation with them is exemplary. “Nigeria is on no list and Nigerians are on no list ban by the U.S.  Government and it is always business as usual and very good business with the U.S. Government.

“Anything you hear in respect of the U.S. is incorrect, so any one that has valid document to go to the U.S. or any other country should please proceed to do so,” he said. In the same vein, the minister said there was no life lost in the recent xenophobic attacks against Nigerians living in South Africa as was also reported in the media.

"I want to say that no Nigerian was killed at the last xenophobic attacks in south Africa, wherever the information is coming from it is not true.
“We have the high commissioner and we have the consular there and the report of people being killed is not correct,” he said. He said the Federal Government was having discussion with the South African Authority at the highest level to ensure that the issue did not repeat itself.

Onyeama said the discussion was also to ensure the protection of foreigners living in South Africa. U.S President Donald Trump had on Monday signed a new executive order which bans immigration from six Muslim-majority countries, dropping Iraq from January’s previous order, and reinstated a temporary blanket ban on all refugees.

The new travel ban comes six weeks after Trump’s original executive order caused chaos at airports nationwide before it was blocked by federal courts.
It removed language in the original order that indefinitely banned Syrian refugees and called for prioritising the admission of refugees who are religious minorities in their home countries.

That provision drew criticism of a religious test for entry and would have prioritised Christians over Muslims fleeing war-torn countries in the Middle East. The new ban, which takes effect March 16, also explicitly exempts citizens of the six banned countries who are legal U.S permanent residents or have valid visas to enter the US.

This included those whose visas were revoked during the original implementation of the ban, senior administration officials said.

Nigeria warns its citizens against travel to US amid Donald Trump travel ban uncertainty

The advice comes the same day that President Trump unveils his newly-worded travel ban.

The Nigerian presidency has warned its citizens not to travel to the US amid ongoing uncertainty over Donald Trump's executive order banning immigration from certain Muslim-majority countries.

Nigeria is not on the list of six countries affected by Mr Trump's so-called travel ban executive order, but the special assistant to the President on foreign affairs and the diaspora said in a statement that several Nigerians with valid visas have been refused entry to the US.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa said their visas were cancelled when they landed in the US and they were put on return flights.

he said: "Nigerians who have no compelling or urgent reason to travel to the US to postpone their travel plans until the new administration's policy on immigration is clear."

Earlier in February the US State Department warned US citizens to avoid travelling to Nigeria due to violence from extremist group Boko Haram, and said the security situation in northeast Nigeria remained "fluid and unpredictable".

The advisories come several weeks after Mr Trump's travel ban, affecting seven Muslim-majority countries, was knocked down by a federal court in Washington state. The President's emergency appeal via the Justice Department was denied.

Instead, the President said they would work with the federal judge's provisions to craft a new ban which leaves out Iraq, one of the seven countries.

The initial ban was signed in late January and prompted massive protests around the US.

The President said the order as signed to protect the country against terrorism, yet no individual from those countries had killed a single American on US soil in a terrorist attack since 2001.

Nearly all travellers were banned from coming to the US for 90 days, and refugees were suspended for 120 days. Syrian refugees were suspended indefinitely.

The President's chief adviser, Steve Bannon, reportedly crafted the ban to ensnare green card holders and dual national citizens.

House Speaker Paul Ryan and Department of Homeland Security chief John Kelly both said the confusion at the roll-out of the ban was "regrettable" but they both publicly supported the ban to defend the country.

Trump Excludes Iraq As He Issues New Travel Ban Order

President Donald Trump signed a revised executive order for a U.S. travel ban on Monday, leaving Iraq off the list of targeted countries, White House Senior Administration Officials said.

The U.S. president’s first immigration order was blocked by the courts.

The new order will impose a 90-day travel ban to the U.S. on citizens of six Muslim-majority nations, namely, Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.

White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders had said earlier that the new order would take effect on March 16.

The new directive delays implementation to limit the disruption that created havoc for some travellers when Mr. Trump issued his original order.

Mr. Trump had said the restrictive order was necessary to ensure domestic security.

His Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, told reporters “As threats to our security continue to evolve and change, common sense dictates that we continually re-evaluate and reassess the systems we rely upon to protect our country”.

“Iraq was taken off the list in the original order, which was issued on Jan. 27, because the Iraqi government has imposed new vetting procedures.

“This includes heightened visa screening and data sharing, also because of its work with the U.S. in countering Islamic State militants.

“There’s going to be a very orderly process, you should not see any chaos so to speak, or alleged chaos at airports.

“There are not going to be folks stopped tonight from coming into the country because of this executive order,” a senior official from the Department of Homeland Security said.

How I will ‘kill’ corruption in Nigeria – Osinbajo

Acting-President, Yemi Osinbajo has said that he will defeat corruption in Nigeria by replicating the model he used to drive down corruption in Lagos State Judiciary to zero percent.

He said he also had the system reformed during his tenure as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos.
He disclosed this during a talk-shop organized in Abuja by Office of the Vice-President in contribution to the national dialogue on corruption.

Osinbajo recalled that corruption in the Lagos State Judiciary dropped to zero percent following the sack of 22 corrupt magistrates and three judges, and by drastic improvement in welfare.

According to him, prior to the reforms, he once met an honest judge who retired after 10 years on the Bench but lived in someone’s boys quarters because he had no house.

He said a judge’s salary of N67,000 then could not build a house. To reverse the trend, every judge was given a house for life, while their remuneration was increased “considerably”, to the extent that Lagos became a reference point.

“It was because a system was in place and impunity was not allowed. It is important that we put in place models that will work,” he said.

Osinbajo noted that in the United Kingdom, candidates undergo 17 different tests before being appointed judges.

The Acting-President added that the three arms of government must collaborate to put in place working systems that are fair and compliant with the rule of law.

“We must work together – the legislature, the judiciary and the executive – to put a model that must work. We must ensure that systems that are put in place are fair and comply with the rule of law,” he said.

He further said that the anti-graft war will not be won where citizens continue to celebrate the corrupt, adding that the underlying causes of corruption, such as deprivation, also need to be addressed.

Osinbajo said a robust international collaboration was also needed to return stolen assets and to stop the hiding of loot abroad.

“One of the critical issues that we have discovered in our fight against corruption is that we need much more robust international cooperation, especially with respect to return of assets.

“We find that the process of returning assets, aside from the judicial process, is so difficult and so complicated that it could just take you literally years to get assets returned.

“And I think that it is important for countries of the world where stolen assets are located to really work with us in ensuring that these assets are returned speedily. I know that the United Kingdom is working with us in particular on this issue of beneficiary register.

“That will be extremely useful for us because we will now be able to discover who is behind some of the names of companies and other shelves that are used to hide stolen assets.’’

I robbed to pay my son’s hospital bill – Robbery Suspect

A robbery suspect in the custody of the Abia State Police Command, Uche Udoma, has claimed that he went into robbery to raise money to pay his son’s hospital bill.

Udoma, who also claimed to be a car panel beater, said he had not found job to do for a long time, adding that when he needed money to take his son to hospital, there was no option but robbery to raise the money. He confessed to newsmen that, “I’m a car panel beater and I have not done any job for some time now. My son became sick, was hospitalised and I needed some money to pay his bill.

“That was what led me into stealing. I broke into my neighbour’s house and stole her Plasma television, but I was caught in the act and the television set was collected back from me.”

The operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit attached to the Umuahia Central Police Station apprehended Udoma when they responded to a distress call from one Dr Chioma Okoli, whose house was burgled by the suspect at Amakama Housing Estate, Umuahia. Upon his arrest, one Plasma television among other household effects were recovered from him.

The Abia State Commissioner of Police, Adeleye Oyebade, confirmed the arrest of the suspect.

He stated that his arrest was in line with the proactive measures introduced by the state police command, which was targeted at catching and arresting criminals in the act.

Fresh romance as Harrysong returns to Five Star Music

Harrysong and Kcee

IT was sad news initially when it went viral on the internet that Harrysong had dumped Five Star Music to float his label, Alter Plate, due to unresolved differences between himself and the management of his label.

The reggae blues singer who had reportedly been the engine room of the label before his exit, announced his departure from Five Star Music last November, a decision which eventually turned messy when he was later arrested by Kcee and his brother, E-Money, alongside his manager, Desmond. Reports had it that the cold war had escalated after the singer was arrested on January 27, 2017 when mobile policemen stormed Harrysong’s house and picked him up on charges of breach of contract, fraud, and a number of undisclosed offences. However, you would recall that at some point, self-acclaimed King of the Jungle, Daddy Showkey, waded into the matter to broker peace and the good news now is that both parties are back again.

E-Daily gathered that Harrysong has officially returned to Five Star Music. Feelers from reliable sources close to Harrysong and Five Star Music revealed that Harrysong’s return is not as an artiste signed to the label but majorly, he’s to fulfill certain commitments the label made on his behalf with some undisclosed parties to avoid further misunderstandings.

E-Daily further gathered that E-Money, has been grossly discontent with the dramatic brouhaha that ensued between Five Star Music and Harrysong. He is, therefore, allegedly hatching plans to organize a big sent-forth party to officially announce the expiration of Harrysong’s contract with the label and to unveil the new record label, Alter Plate, which Harrysong is already floating and has released a single under the label’s imprint.

However, the question this new development raises is, would Harrysong actually go through with the commitments made on his behalf by the management of his former label if there is no monetary benefit? Because there are possibilities that Five Star may not furnish him with the entire details of the commitments in question; therefore on discovery that there are no financial benefits whatsoever, he may decide not to pull through with his initial agreement to fulfill the said commitments.

Photo: RRS arrests three fleeing kidnappers after collecting N3m ransom from their victim

The operatives of Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command over the weekend arrested three suspected kidnappers fleeing from Ibadan in Lagos after collecting N3 million ransom.
The kidnappers, Adekunle Funsho (31), Charles Ezeilo (32) and Obioha Nnaji were apprehended in Abule Egba Lagos after kidnapping a lady and collecting N3 million ransom.
The kidnappers had, after collecting the ransom fled to Lagos.

The police in Ibadan after discovering that the kidnappers were heading to Lagos with the victim’s Toyota Highlander had radioed Lagos for assistance.

RRS officials on receiving the radio signal tracked the vehicle to Fela Shrine in Ikeja, from where the alleged suspects further moved the vehicle to a compound somewhere Abule Egba, Lagos.

It was there that the officers arrested a suspect before recovering the Toyota Highlander 2005 model with the registration number LND 954 EE.

The first suspect assisted the police in the arrest of another suspect who was later apprehended in Fela's Shrine in Ikeja while another suspect simply identified as Theophilus is on the run.

According to one of the suspects, Adekunle Funsho, a fashion designer around Felele, Ibadan, where it was believed the kidnapping took place,

“Theophilus handed over the car to me in Ibadan and told me to look for a buyer for the car…. I brought the car to Lagos because I know that I would get a buyer quickly for the car. The instruction from him was that I sell the Highlander at N800, 000:00.

He stated further,

“I got a buyer In Ondo State. He has bought a car from me before, a fairly clean Toyota Corolla. He bought it N550,000:00. I took the car to him on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, where he paid me before moving the car away….

Charles is my friend of over 5 years. We met at Redeemed Church, Ogba, where I was a chorister. I gave him the car to help me warehouse it for me to get a buyer. He took the car from me at Fela Shrine to his house in Abule Egba.”

Speak with me to prove you are healthy- Fayose tells President Buhari

Ekiti state governor, Ayo Fayose, has asked President Buhari to speak with him to prove that he is indeed healthy. President Buhari who has been in the UK for over a month now, has been speaking on the phone to some APC governors, Foreign presidents as well as some of his media aides.

In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary media aide, Idowu Adelusi, Fayose gave out a phone number he could be reached at.

”I advised the President to speak with me for the purpose of convincing Nigerians that he is hale and hearty instead of looking for people outside the country to convince Nigerians.

If their problem is that they are looking for a credible person who can help them convince Nigerians that all is well with our President, Ayo Fayose is their best bet. Let the president speak with me. If I tell Nigerians that the president spoke with me, Nigerians will believe.

Since they are eager for the president to speak to people; believing in this way to convince Nigerians that their President is hale and hearty, let President Buhari talk to me.

I can be reached on 08035024994. I am credible and Nigerians will believe me. They said he spoke to President Donald Trump. Despite the hype, Nigerians were skeptical.

Then they said he spoke to the king of Morocco; again, Nigerians were suspicious. Before we recovered from that, it is now the AU president that they said President Buhari spoke to. A president that can speak with outsiders should be able to whisper or wave to his own people.

The people gave him the very important platform of President on which he stands today and, therefore, Presidential aides should stop giving the unhelpful impression that Buhari has no respect for the Nigerian electorate".

BBNaija's Cocoice talks marriage, life outside the House and the breast-sucking moment

Former Big Brother Naija housemate and rapper,  Mojisola Serah Sowole, popularly known as Cocoice, spoke with Segun Adebayo of Nigerian Tribune on some of the low and high moments of her stay in the house, marriage plans and of course, the boob-sucking moment that got many people talking.

"Honestly, it was not a dare game, as many people assumed. In truth, I was just having fun. I didn't do it to get votes. It was never about the votes"
On how her parents reacted to the incident, she said:

"A Yoruba adage says “ti aba fi owo otun ba omo wi, afi ti osi fa mora”, which means when you scold a child with your right hand, you embrace him with the left. As far as I know, that was exactly what they did. We have all moved on from that moment. The truth is that being one of the 14 housemates chosen for the show already makes me feel like a winner, so I have no regrets. I feel proud of every moment I had in the house. No regrets at all."

Has it cost you any lucrative deal since you came back?
As I said earlier, I have been enjoying my time since I came out of the house and to tell you the truth, I have been getting offers since I left the BBNaija house. So I wouldn’t know of any lucrative deal that it has cost me.

If you were to date any of the guys in the house for real, who would that person be?
Bally is cool, calm and collected. He’s a sort of my kind of guy.

How happy are you to be back with your people back home?
I feel very happy to be home. You can’t compare the feeling to anything. I have really missed my family and friends. My world has really turned around towards greatness. When the people around me are happy, I am happy.

Many people would want to know what next project Cocoice is working on?
I’m currently working on my music and video single entitled Feeling my P and collaborations with other talented Nigerian artistes.

What’s the name Cocoice about? Where did you get it from?
‘Coco’ stands for coconut, rough on the outside which describes my past and pure on the inside. ‘Ice’ which stands for breaking the ice (breakthrough).

You must have had a relationship before your stint in the house. How difficult has it been coming back to all that?
I was single before I went into the BBNaija house. There is no point coming back into any relationship.

Is marriage on the card for you anytime soon?
I am still waiting for Mr Right

See 12-year-old Borno shoe shiner, who was enrolled in school by good Samaritan outshines classmates

12-year-old shoe shiner, Ibrahim Bukar, who moved around Maiduguri cleaning shoes is now a pupil of Future Hope Private School in London Chiki area of Borno State, all thanks to a good Samaritan, Ibrahim Yusuf.

Mr. Yusuf, met the young boy wandering in the city in search of customers and asked him questions about his life. Bukar said he was the breadwinner of the family, as he gives his daily earnings to them. Moved by his condition, he asked the boy to take him to his father.

"The boy took us to their house in London Chiki, but unfortunately the father was not at home. We were told the father is a trader around Custom area, so we decided to go and see him in his place of business," Mr Yusuf, told DAILY NIGERIAN.

"On reaching there, the father was not around also, but his goods were there on display and his business neighbours told us he went away, but will be back soon. We waited, and while waiting for him, I got to understand why he could not send his boy to school.

"We waited for about 45 minutes, and throughout the time, nobody came to buy the beans and the millet he was selling. When he eventually came back, we greeted him and informed him about our mission there.

"The man almost burst into tears, he told us that he had wanted his children to go to school, but unfortunately he can’t afford to. He told us that before the insurgency became worse, he had sent the boy to Almajiri school in Dikwa, but when boko Haram took over the place, the boy escaped and came back to Maiduguri.

"With the support of a philanthropist and my little effort, Ibrahim is now in Future Hope private school in London Chiki area of Maiduguri, and so far he is doing very well. I visited the school today (Friday) to see for myself how he is doing.

"His teacher informed me that Ibrahim is already performing beyond expectations. She told me that he said he wanted to be the best student in the class, and every evening receives extra lessons from one boy in his neighbourhood. Ibrahim can now recite the English alphabets from A to Z, just within one week. His is outshining his classmates," Mr Yusuf said.

The head teacher said Master Bukar would be getting accelerated promotion every year according to his level of comprehension and receiving crash lessons to make up the skipped classes.

Testimony: Woman claims pastor's anointing oil changed her baby's gender from boy to girl

A woman, who wanted a baby girl shared her testimony at the ongoing Sunday service at the Enlightened Christian Gathering Church, Pretoria, led by wealthy Malawian pastor, Prophet Shepherd Bushiri. See post below:

"My baby girl is a miracle baby... A lady from Botswana steps forward to testify on behalf of her sister, who was seven months pregnant and was believing God for a baby girl. She narrates that the doctor scanned and told her that she is carrying a baby boy. Her sister was disappointed because she already has two sons and was hoping for a baby girl. I came as an International Visitor and Major 1 gave me a gift of the anointing oil.
When I arrived home I gave my sister the anointing oil and in faith my sister applied the anointing oil declaring that the God of Major 1 must change the gender of the unborn baby that she was carrying to change from a baby boy to a baby girl. On the day that she was giving birth the doctors were shocked as they saw a baby's gender had changed from a male to female. And when her father heard of what had happened, he changed from going to the sangomas and he followed them to pray to the God of Major 1.
Wherever you are something is turning around in the mighty name of Jesus."

Donald Trump wants Congress to investigate whether Obama administration abused power

Following wire tapping accusations made against former President Obama, President Donald Trump is asking Congress to look into the Obama administration whether it abused its investigative powers before the 2016 presidential election White House press secretary Sean Spicer said in a statement Sunday:

"Reports concerning potentially politically motivated investigations immediately ahead of the 2016 election are very troubling. President Donald J. Trump is requesting that as part of their investigation into Russian activity, the congressional intelligence committees exercise their oversight authority to determine whether executive branch investigative powers were abused in 2016. Neither the White House nor the President will comment further until such oversight is conducted."

Despite FBI Directory, James Comey, refuting Trump's claims about the claims, the White House has showed no indication that it would back down from Mr. Trump’s claims. In a statement from his spokesman, Mr. Trump called “reports” about the wiretapping “very troubling” and said that Congress should examine them as part of its investigations into Russia’s meddling in the election.

Three Republicans sitting on intelligence committees have said they’d probe Trump’s claims. Rep. Devin Nunes (Republican-California.), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said the group will look into the claims as part of its wider probe into Russia’s alleged hacking during the campaign. He said:

“One of the focus points of the House Intelligence Committee’s investigation is the U.S. government’s response to actions taken by Russian intelligence agents during the presidential campaign,” Nunes said in a statement. “As such, the Committee will make inquiries into whether the government was conducting surveillance activities on any political party’s campaign officials or surrogates, and we will continue to investigate this issue if the evidence warrants it.”

Sen. Tom Cotton (Republican-Arkansas.), a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, acknowledged on “Fox News Sunday” that he’s seen “no evidence” of Trump’s allegations, but he said his colleagues will look into it anyway.

“We are going to review allegations of any kind of improper contacts between Russian officials and campaign officials or other American citizens. I’m sure that we will be reviewing any allegations such as this,” Cotton said.

Sen. Marco Rubio (Republican-Florida.), former Republican presidential candidate, who sits on the same committee, told CNN he was “not sure what it is (Trump) is talking about” but that the committee would “gather the facts.”

Yoruba have benefited most from Buhari – Shittu, Communications Minister

Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Barrister Abdur-Raheem Adebayo Shittu, is reputed as one of the strongest political loyalists of President Muhammadu Buhari having partnered with him over the years from the Congress for Progressives Change, CPC, to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Following his law education at the then University of Ife, where he obtained a degree in law in 1974, he in 1979, became the youngest member of the Oyo State House of Assembly at the advent of the Second Republic and in 1983 became the Attorney General of the State and Commissioner for Justice until the advent of the Buhari junta in December 1983.

He also held the same position as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice during the Rasheed Ladoja administration. In this interview held in Abuja, the Iseyin, Oyo State-born minister spoke on some national issues. Excerpts:

What is the matter with the  government as regards economic revival?

The government has been trying to revive the economy and one of the ways is the anti-corruption crusade, which is a win-win.So, a lot of money is coming. If the money is not being spent because of possibility of litigation and the use of the money as exhibit, it doesn’t mean that something is wrong.

I mean people accusing the President of not doing anything have not provided alternative solutions. And particularly, some political leaders or leaders of the All Progressives Congress, if they feel that something is not right enough, I think what is demanded of them, as patriotic and loyal party men, is for them to provide alternatives to Mr. President in confidence, rather than playing to the gallery with due respect to those involved.

The impression they created was that they advised the President but he didn’t take their advice…

They have not said that. It would be presumptuous for anybody to allege that. And I am sure that there is no such thing.

What of claims by some APC leaders that the president’s policies are outdated and that he should change his economic team? Which policies are outdated?

Nigeria belongs to all of us even if some people are in government.
And in any case all the leaders of the party are also in government by extension and so, if the government is discredited, they will share from the discredit. So, once you are loyal and conscientious party members, the least you should do is to attack the policies of the President and the thing they should do is to provide alternatives, possibly even call a party convention to table some of these for discussion and deliberation. So, merely playing to the gallery I think is less patriotic and of course less commitment of such people to the survival of the party.

Recently, there was a meeting on Yoruba unity by APC leaders in Ibadan, which was to unite the Yoruba in the party and another one was scheduled for Ado-Ekiti…

I was in Ibadan and I am not aware that any other meeting has been fixed for Ado-Ekiti.

What was your perception of the Ibadan meeting?

The perception I saw of that meeting in Ibadan was that they want the people of South West to be united so that the benefit that will be accruable to the people of South West will be achieved.

Is the marginalisation that the Yoruba complained of during the Goodluck Jonathan era been addressed under Muhammadu Buhari?

I have come to be convinced, of all the zones that have benefited from the Buhari government, I want to believe that the South West is foremost in benefits and I will tell you why.

Why?

Each of the six states of the South West except one has substantive ministerial appointee.
Not only substantive ministerial appointees; ministers of key ministries. I am Minister of Communications which, over the last one year, has contributed more than 10 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

We have a three-in-one minister in Fashola (SAN), who controls power, works and housing. We have a Minister of Health in Professor Adewole and you know how important that ministry is. And again, we have a Minister of Solid Minerals, which is an economic hotspot for an emerging economy like Nigeria and that one is controlled by Dr. Kayode Fayemi from Ekiti.

It is only Ondo that has a minister of state. And Ogun has the Minister of Finance in Mrs Kemi Adeosun. I mean I don’t know of any geo-political zone, which has that bunch of opportunities. So, in terms of equity, the South West has benefited more.

It has never happened in the history of this country when you have a Federal Government with this crop of ministers coming from Yoruba land.

So, what do you think should be the end-result of this meeting that is being held by South West? I don’t know.

One thing is for leaders to meet but the truth is also that when leaders meet, more often than not, they discountenance the interest of the people of their zones. And I know that the people of Yoruba land are very loyal and are in love with the Buhari presidency.

They appreciate what the government is doing and, in fact, they rain curses on people who criticise Buhari’s presidency. And I know that when the chips are down, the Yoruba people, not just leaders, I am not saying leaders are not relevant, political leaders more often than not will always supposedly fight for the interest of the people.

What is important is, no one can say that the people of the South West have been discriminated against or undermined or short-changed by the Buhari administration.

In essence, are you saying that unity meeting or not, Yoruba people have no problem as far as this government is concerned?

Yoruba, as the most enterprising people in this country, should work harder for a more united Nigeria because our enterprise requires a bigger market. If we don’t have a big market, there is no how we can survive and there is no way our enterprise can survive.

I mean think of the businesses in Lagos, most of them are controlled by Yoruba. Think of the banking sector, most of them are controlled by Yoruba. And think of even the Nigerian Armed Forces now, a Yoruba man is the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and in any case a Yoruba man is also the Vice President of this country. So, in the circumstance of Nigeria, what else are we looking for?

Asa releases regal new photos

Asa is a lot of things to different people. To some, she is a world class musician. To others she is a superb instrumentalist and while all this is true, but let’s not forget that she is also very easy on the eyes.

Even though she has been quiet music wise in recent times, if she continues putting out photos like the ones she recently released via her Instagram page, then she’ll not be forgotten for many years to come.

The first photo taken by Lakin Ogunbanwo sees her dressed in a simple black top with a chain like necklace and the tips of her famous dreads rolled together.

Photo number two is a close head shot of her. I particularly like the way the photographer used clever lighting to bring out her face.
